The Bond tegen vloeken (Dutch; "Bund gegen Fluchen ") is a Christian organization in the Netherlands . She advocates a respectful use of language without swear words and curses. The organization also criticizes rough language and curses.

history

The founding of the federal government was called for in 1916. J. Baas from Den Helder looked for like-minded people in the newspaper De Standaard , which was set up as Protestant and Reformed . On September 17th of the following year it was founded, among others by Lodewijk Duymaer van Twist, a general and member of parliament of the anti-revolutionary party . It was believed to be a trend of the time for people to become indifferent to religion and there was concern about the extent to which cursing was taking place in the Netherlands.

Later, the term Bond tegen het schenden door het vloeken van Gods holy Naam (“Covenant against desecration by cursing with God's holy name”) was shortened to Bond tegen het vloeken . Since September 1, 2012, the specific article het has been dispensed with .

In its prime, the covenant had nearly 30,000 members. For demographic reasons, however, there are fewer donors.

Goal and procedure

According to the statutes, the federal government wants to combat swearing in all parts of the population. In particular, the curse godverdomme (“goddamned”) is a thorn in the side of the covenant. He is also generally concerned with combating hurtful, obscene and rude use of language. This should make the Netherlands more beautiful. The federal government wants to target young people in particular. Swearing often happens without thinking about it.

The federal government is known in particular for advertisements in the media and the use of posters at train stations. The best known shows a parrot with the text: “Swearing is learned! Don't chatter! "

Federal representatives also go to schools and speak to associations. Some campaigns are aimed at the use of language by certain target groups such as sports clubs. According to its own statement, the federal government had around 250 such honorary representatives in 2014. The federal government also commissions studies on swearing, such as the annual “Vloekmonitor”. As a result, there is twice as much cursing on private television than on public television.

A study commissioned by the federal government in 2015 criticized the use of language in a quarter of the children's books examined, with examples such as rotzak ( bastard ), shit , fuck , tieten (tits), jezus , hoer (whore), zeiknat (piss-wet). At least the gvd-vloek (godverdomme) was not found. In the previous year, a third of children's books were still affected. A survey of young people in 2015 found that they found kanker (cancer) to be the most hurtful.

Politically, the federal government is committed to ensuring that Dutch law continues to criminalize blasphemy. Another issue for him is the insult to religions, which in his opinion must be punished more severely.

The federal government does not receive subsidies from the Reich government , but from individual municipalities. Such support for an ultimately religious organization sometimes leads to criticism. The federal government found out through an image study that it is sometimes assessed as extreme, stupid, unnecessary or backward. Since 2012 the name of the federal government has been omitted from the posters.
