Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre

Pastor, Abbé Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre (* 1752 in Aveyron , † September 20, 1804 in Saint-Geniez ) was a French priest, naturalist and zoologist .

Bonnaterre entered the seminary of Rodez in 1772 and was ordained a priest there on February 22, 1779 . He became a vicar and then went to Paris , where he helped write the encyclopedia . He studied the natural sciences and also medicine and in 1798 published a book with medical content. In 1796 he founded the zoo jardin zoologique in Rodez and on May 16, 1797 became a professor at the École centrale de l'Aveyron .

Bonnaterre contributed texts on many fish and birds to the Tableau encyclopédique et méthodique . He was the first scientist to study the wolf child Victor von Aveyron and study its behavior.

Bonnaterre described over 25 new species of fish and illustrated over 400 fish in his encyclopedic works.
