Bonosus of Trier

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bonosus († around 373 ) was Bishop of Trier .

After Bishop Paulinus was exiled to Phrygia , an election for a bishop was scheduled. In this election Bonosus was elected Bishop of Trier, but he refused to take up the office.

This may have been due to the fact that Bonosus was convinced that Paulinus, who was in exile, was still the rightful bishop of Trier and that he could therefore not take up this office. The emperor was so angry about this that he had Bonosus locked in prison. Only after the death of Paulinus in 358 (or at the latest in 361, i.e. after the death of the emperor) did Bonosus assume the office of Bishop of Trier. He is said to have excelled in the fight against Arianism .

His grave was temporarily in the St. Symphorian Monastery . Today it is located in the St. Paulin Basilica in Trier.

In the Diocese of Trier, Bonosus is venerated as a saint. His feast day is February 17th.
