Britto of Trier
Britto von Trier († around 386 ) was Bishop of Trier.
Britto is testified for the first time at the meeting of the Gallic bishops in 374 in Valence on the Rhône. He campaigned here to ensure that the Christians who fell away at the time of persecution under Emperor Julian (361–363) could return to the church under certain conditions. He took as a representative of the Gallic Church at the Roman synod 382 chaired by Pope I. Damasus part. This meeting sent a letter to the bishops of the East, which Britto signed in third place (after Pope Damasus and Bishop Ambrosius ), which underlines his importance as Bishop of Trier .
The trial of the Priscillians who had been accused of heresy and sorcery began at the Emperor's court in Trier during his time as bishop . Together with Martin von Tours and Ambrosius von Milan, who had traveled to Trier for this purpose , he tried in vain to prevent the execution of Priscillian. Britto died in 385 or 386, his grave is venerated in St. Paulin in Trier.
Britto is venerated as a saint in the diocese of Trier, his feast day is May 6th.
