Pereskia stenantha is a species of plant in the genus Pereskia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet refers to the tubular flower or upright petals. Portuguese common names are "Espinha de Santo Antonio", "Flor de Cêra" and "Quiabento".

Leaves and thorns

Pereskia stenantha grows shrubby to tree-shaped, branched at or near the base, forms trunks up to 15 centimeters in diameter and reaches heights of 2 to 4 meters. The leaves of different sizes and shapes are petiolate, obovate to elliptical and often folded slightly upwards along the midrib. The leaf blade is 7 to 11 inches long and 4 to 6 inches wide. The leaf veins have 5 to 7 side branches. The midrib protrudes from the bottom. The up to 7 stiff thorns on the areoles of the branches, which may also be missing, are in clusters or are spread out and 1 to 5 centimeters long. Thorns up to 40 to 5 centimeters long arise from the areoles on the trunk.

The pink to slightly purple-pink, bell-shaped to urn-shaped flowers open only a little and are grouped in dense, terminal inflorescences . They reach a diameter of 1 to 2 centimeters. The pear-shaped to top-shaped fruits are green to yellowish green. They are 3 to 7 centimeters long and have a diameter of 2 to 6 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pereskia stenantha is found in the Brazilian state of Bahia in the caatinga vegetation at altitudes of 400 to 600 meters. It was first described in 1979 by Friedrich Ritter .

Pereskia stenantha is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. classified not endangered.
