Boats is a monthly, German-language magazine aimed at motorboat drivers. The magazine was founded in 1967 and is published by Delius Klasing Verlag .

The magazine maintains its dominant position in Germany and is also Europe's largest motorboat magazine. The editorial office is in Hamburg.

history

The magazine Die Yacht , published for the first time in 1904, dealt, as the previous subtitle "Illustrated weekly for sailing, motorboat industry, yacht travel and shipbuilding" showed, not only topics of sailing, but also of motorized water sports. In 1923 the magazine was taken over by Delius Klasing Verlag, which had previously published the magazine Das Motorschiff und Motorboot . In the following years Die Yacht was both the official body of the German Sailing Association and the German Motor Yacht Association . After the Second World War, the yacht then focused more and more on topics related to sailing.

In the time of the economic miracle after the Second World War, more and more Germans bought small motor boats that they could transport on the roof of a car or on a trailer. Delius Klasing Verlag took this trend into account by publishing a magazine auto & boot . Since neither one nor the other target group felt addressed, the magazine was unsuccessful. Then the publisher bought the rights of a failed Munich after half a year magazine boats and gave this name in March 1967 for the first time a new magazine out. The magazine also reported on topics for sailors until the 1980s, and the subtitle of the magazine was accordingly general: “Magazine for Leisure Captains”.

Competitors in the founding period were the magazines The motorboat (Heinz Peek Verlag, Gräfelfing ) and stander (West German publishing house, Herford ). The stander was discontinued at the end of 2002, the Delius Klasing Verlag bought the naming rights. The note “UNITED WITH stander” was printed on the title page in 2003, and since then it has only appeared in the imprint. Currently the only competitor on the German market is skipper magazine , which in turn took over another competitor, the boat trade , in mid-2016 .

The price for a single issue in Germany was DM 3.50 in 1967, and  € 5.20 in 2017. The editions are now also available as e-papers , the price per unit is € 3.99. Print and electronic editions are also available by subscription.
