A boot image is a memory image of a bootable data carrier such as a floppy disk , CD-ROM , DVD or hard drive (less often flash data carrier such as USB stick or CompactFlash or similar connected via an adapter ).

It is offered for download on the Internet , for example , and can then be played back onto a comparable data carrier on the target system.
