history
In 1906 the British Church Mission Society began missioning the Bor region.
The Second Civil War in South Sudan began in Bor and surrounding areas in May 1983 when army units under John Garang mutinied and founded the SPLA that same year . In 1991 the city became famous for the "Bor massacre". Riek Machar , a Nuer and leader of a split-off faction of the Dinka-dominated SPLA, backed by the Sudanese government at the time, is held responsible for the deaths of well over 2,000 civilians. In August 2011, he apologized to representatives of the Bor-Dinka for his role in the massacre.
economy
There are larger oil deposits near the city, and the oil company TotalFinaElf has concessions for an area of 120,000 square kilometers that could not be exploited due to the security situation in the course of the civil war that lasted until 2005.
Infrastructure
Occasional cargo ships operate on the Nile between Juba in the south via Bor to Kusti . The Jonglei Canal was supposed to connect Bor with Malakal , but its completion was prevented from 1983 by the civil war.
