Life

Boris Karlow was born in Sofia into a Roma family. His father Karlo Aliew was a trumpeter in a well-known brass band in the 1930s. Influenced by Bulgarian folk music , he joined the band at an early age, where he played the tambura and accordion, among other things . First on a simple 48-base instrument, later on a 120-base instrument and finally on an Italian accordion made especially for him.

In the 1950s there was great demand for Karlow's and his music not only in Bulgaria, but also in Yugoslavia and Austria. He therefore gave numerous concerts and garnered positive reviews. He rearranged melodies that were originally played on instruments such as the kaval or the gajda for the accordion, giving traditional Bulgarian music a new character with respect for its origins.

Boris Karlow died of a kidney infection on a concert tour in Kraljevo .

His pieces were u. a. recorded by Bulgarian National Radio. 40 songs, including various horos and other rare recordings, were released on a double CD.
