Boris Markowitsch Werlinski ( Russian Борис Маркович Верлинский , scientific transliteration Boris Markovič Verlinskij ; born December 27, 1887 in Bachmut ; † October 30, 1950 in Moscow ) was a Soviet chess master and the first grandmaster of the USSR .
In 1910 Werlinski won the Russian youth tournament in Odessa . He took part in several Soviet tournaments: including the first international tournament in Moscow in 1925 (where he sensationally beat Capablanca ), in 1926 he shared first place in the Ukrainian championship, in 1928 he became champion of Moscow, in 1929 he won 5th in Odessa . USSR championship in front of Mikhail Botvinnik , among others . He was the first to be awarded the title of Grand Master of the USSR by the Soviet Chess Federation , but lost it in 1931 because the title was abolished.
In 1950, shortly before his death, FIDE awarded him the title of International Master .
