history

The Borromäus Hospital Leer was founded in 1865 by the Catholic parish of Seliger Hermann Lange (formerly called St. Michael) as a hospital and poor house, and in the same year nuns from the community of Maurice Franciscan Sisters in Münster began their work. The choice of Saint Borromeo as the patron saint shows the hospital's Catholic character. In 1869 the foundation stone was laid for a new building.

In 1930, after several years of construction, a comprehensive extension was put into operation. During the Second World War , the house was leased to the German military administration as a naval hospital.

After the end of the war, the hospital returned to its status as a civilian hospital and resumed its function as a Catholic hospital in the post-war years. In response to the growing number of patients, the house invested in expanding the hospital space until the 1960s, and in the late 1980s it was completely renovated in order to adapt the Borromäus Hospital to the current state of medical development and increasing patient demands.

In particular, investments have been made in the restructuring of the reception and functional area in recent years. A new emergency room was set up with a direct connection to the central occupancy management, the inpatient admission and the radiology department. In addition, investments were made in expanding the patient rooms. In the coming years, investments in the equipment as well as further structural changes are planned to further improve the process quality . The Borromäus Hospital has been certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001: 2015 since 2015 .
