Botan is a free cryptography - Library , in C ++ written and BSD license was published. It provides a wide range of cryptographic algorithms, formats and encryption protocols (e.g. SSL and TLS ).
It is used in the software projects Monotone (distributed version control system), OpenDNSSEC , and ISC Kea DHCP Server .
The project was originally called OpenCL and was renamed Botan in 2002, as Apple and the Khronos Group use the name OpenCL for an open standard for cross-platform computing on CPUs and GPUs.
In 2007, the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) commissioned FlexSecure GmbH to implement Card Verifiable Certificates in biometric passports in Botan. The modified Botan version was published under the name InSiTo.
In 2015, the BSI financed the project “Secure implementation of a general crypto library”, which was completed in 2017 with the improvement of the documentation, the test suite and the features of Botan.
