The Jardín Botánico de la Universidad de Granada (Botanical Garden of the University of Granada) is a very small botanical garden in the center of the Andalusian city of Granada ; it is on the outskirts of the current law faculty of the university and is bordered by the streets of Duquesa, Málaga and Escuelas.

history

The garden of the Jesuit monastery on a city map of Granada (Ambrosio Vico, 1610)

Originally the garden of a Jesuit monastery was located here. After the Jesuits lost the area to the city in 1769, a medical garden was set up here in 1783. Between 1840 and 1850, the site was finally established as a botanical garden by the University of Granada for the study of flora. The botanist Mariano del Amo y Mora was responsible. The basic material used included plant seeds from the Botanical Garden in Madrid and plants from the nearby Sierra Nevada . The University of Granada now maintains a larger botanical garden, the Jardín Botánico de la Cortijuela , about 30 km from the city in the Sierra Nevada Park . The historic Botanical Garden of Granada was restored in 1998 and is now more of an urban retreat of ornamental-historical value.

Collections

The collection is divided into two parts: The Escuela Botanicá and the Cuadros de Floricultura . In total, there are several dozen larger trees and numerous smaller plants in the aisle-shaped spaces in the garden.

Best known is the very large ginkgo planted in the facility in 1889 ; it is one of the oldest ginkgo trees in all of Spain and the first in the city of Granada, where ginkgos are now popular street trees.
