The Nikita Botanical Garden ( Ukrainian Нікітський ботанічний сад Nikitskyj botanitschnyj sad , "Nikita Botanical Garden") was founded in 1812 by Christian von Steven and is located about 7.5 km east of Yalta in the small settlement Nikita.
The garden is subordinate to the Ukrainian Academy of Agriculture and houses twelve institutes. The main task is to research the fauna and flora in the subtropical climate of the Crimea and their industrial use.
Around 50,000 plants from all over the world are shown here on an area of 1100 ha. The rose collection is famous with more than 2000 species. There are numerous unique plants, including rare specimens of the Himalayan and Lebanon cedars, rhododendrons, rare medicinal plants, and a millennial pistachio tree. Connected to the botanical garden are one of the oldest botanical libraries, a museum and one of the world's largest herbaria.
The asteroid (4480) Nikitibotania , discovered on August 24, 1985, was named after the garden in 1994.
