character

The botanical garden has no public character, but is primarily used for the cultivation of plants as test and determination material for the botany department of the university. Around 3500 species are currently cultivated on around 1000 square meters of greenhouse space and 3000 square meters of outdoor space. In addition, there are some key collections; In addition to the Mediterranean house and the milkweed plants , the carnivore collection , which is one of the largest collections of its kind in Germany, is worth mentioning .

history

The garden was founded in the early 1980s by Guido Benno Feige, who held the chair for botany / plant physiology at the University of Duisburg-Essen from 1980 to 2005 . The focus of the collection on the Mediterranean goes back to him . At the same time as Feige's resignation, the sale of the grounds of the Botanical Garden and its move to another site were discussed. Feige's successor was Martin Heil. Hardy Pfanz is currently in charge of the Botanical Garden.

In 2010 the Botanical Garden of the University of Duisburg-Essen moved to the western edge of the Grugapark in Essen, behind the Tropenhaus and the Mediterraneum, and was officially opened in May 2012. Both gardens will remain independent, but will cooperate with each other in the future. For this purpose a teaching and a research greenhouse were built.
