Bourtie Parish Church

The Bourtie Parish Church is a parish of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish scattered settlement Kirkton of Bourtie in the Council area Aberdeenshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

There was a church building on the site as early as 1199, which was placed under St Andrews Priory that year . After the parish had already shared a parish with the two surrounding parishes in the second half of the 16th century, the parish was formally merged with the neighboring parish of Meldrum in 1618 . In 1650 both communities were separated again. Today's Bourtie Parish Church was built on the same site in 1806. Various elements from the previous church have been reused; including the church bell cast by John Mowat in 1760 . In 1934 a minor overhaul of the interior was carried out.

description

The Bourtie Parish Church is located in the middle of the scattered settlement Kirkton of Bourtie about 1.5 km south of Oldmeldrum . The simple, neo-Gothic building has an almost square floor plan. Its masonry is made of reading stone . Two high pointed arch windows are set into the south facade . The ogival main portal, however, is on the north side. The building closes with a high hipped roof. On its west-facing eaves sits a small roof turret with an open bell.
