Bowdoin (pronounced "Bodin") is a subway station of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in the Boston district of Beacon Hill in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . She's southern terminus of the line Blue Line . Should the neighboring Government Center station be rebuilt or the line expanded to the south, the intention is to close Bowdoin .

history

The station was opened on March 18, 1916 as the terminus of the East Boston Tunnel and converted in 1925 for use by subways. Due to the limited space and the equally tight turning loop, which dates back to the time of the trams, the Blue Line cars are 48 ft (14.6  m ) long  compared to 65 ft (19.8 m) ( Orange Line ) or 69 ft (21 m) ( Red Line ) relatively short.

Current situation

The number of passengers at the station is relatively low, mainly due to the very short distance of just over 980  ft (298.7  m ) from Government Center station , which is why Bowdoin is only open on weekdays and then only during the day - outside these times the neighboring station as the terminus. It is therefore planned to close Bowdoin after the renovation work in the Government Center station and only continue to operate it as a turning loop. A complete closure is planned in the event that the Blue Line is extended south to the Charles / MGH station .
