Bowen Island is a sandstone island about 190 meters from the Bherwerre Peninsula in the South Pacific off the coast of Australia . It was named after Richard Bowen (1761–1797), a captain in the Royal Navy .

geography

The island is part of the small Australian Jervis Bay Territory and the Booderee National Park . Less than 200 meters from the coast of the mainland, it is located in the southern area of ​​the entrance to Jarvis Bay .

The island is shaped like a teardrop. It is about 1.1 kilometers long from north to south and 600 meters wide from east to west.

Birds

In order not to disturb the seabirds as they breed, the area is not open to the public. Birds like the black oystercatcher and shearwater live on the island .

There is a small penguin colony on Bowen Island with around 5000 pairs. The population has increased significantly in the last few decades. Some of the animals were tagged with a chip .
