Bowman Island is an ice-covered island off the Knox coast of Wilkesland, East Antarctica . It is 40 km northeast of Cape Elliott in the northeastern part of the Shackleton Ice Shelf , which partially surrounds the island. The island is 39 km long, 3 to 9 km wide and takes the shape of an eight. The area covers an area of 236.2 km².
Participants of the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE), led by the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson, discovered it on January 28, 1931. Mawson named the island after the US geographer Isaiah Bowman , president of the American Geographical Society from 1919 to 1931 1935.
