The Bowshank Tunnel is a railway tunnel in the Scottish Council Area Scottish Borders . It is located in a sparsely populated region between the villages of Galashiels in the south and Stow in the north.

description

The Waverley Line ( Edinburgh - Carlisle ) tracks run through the tunnel . The railway line follows the east bank of Gala Water from Galashiels . However, this describes a narrow loop at the site of the tunnel that is difficult to follow for rail traffic. Instead, the route was led in a slight curve through a bridge on both sides of the loop across the river twice. The Bowshank Tunnel lies between the two bridges and runs through the Umlaufberg .

The tunnel has a length of around 195 m. The south portal is lined with ashlar stones that are built into rusticated layered masonry . In contrast, only roughly hewn quarry stone was used on the north portal . The tunnel itself is lined. The masonry shows various signs of repair work. New bricks were partly used. The south portal was also reinforced with concrete. Wall niches are set in for the route keepers near the south portal.

After the closure of the Waverley Line in the 1960s, the tunnel became obsolete and the tracks were removed. As part of the reconstruction of the line as the Borders Railway (Edinburgh– Tweedbank ), two tracks were laid again in 2014 through the Bowshank Tunnel. Trains have been running through the tunnel again as scheduled since September 6, 2015.
