Boxberg (Gotha)
The 358.7 m above sea level. NHN high Boxberg is a wooded ridge in the western Thuringian mountain and hill country southwest of Gotha .
The name means something like "mountain on which (sheep) rams graze", as the older spelling Bocksberg suggests. The ridge, up to 360 meters above sea level, with the “Small Boxberg” in the east and the “Great Boxberg” in the west, covers an area of around five square kilometers and towers above the surrounding landscape by 10 to 30 meters. The Boxberg is cut through by the federal highway 4 .
The Boxberg became famous for the horse racing track there . A handful of houses and a restaurant at the racetrack form the district of Gotha, also called Boxberg . The forests on the small and large Boxberg are a recreational area from Gotha and can be reached via the Thuringian Forest Railway. The Leinakanal also runs through the Boxberg area.
