Boxberg (Gotha)

The 358.7  m above sea level. NHN high Boxberg is a wooded ridge in the western Thuringian mountain and hill country southwest of Gotha .

The name means something like "mountain on which (sheep) rams graze", as the older spelling Bocksberg suggests. The ridge, up to 360 meters above sea ​​level, with the “Small Boxberg” in the east and the “Great Boxberg” in the west, covers an area of ​​around five square kilometers and towers above the surrounding landscape by 10 to 30 meters. The Boxberg is cut through by the federal highway 4 .

The Boxberg became famous for the horse racing track there . A handful of houses and a restaurant at the racetrack form the district of Gotha, also called Boxberg . The forests on the small and large Boxberg are a recreational area from Gotha and can be reached via the Thuringian Forest Railway. The Leinakanal also runs through the Boxberg area.
