A punching bag (colloquially also sandbag ) is a training device that is used by boxers and other martial artists to train punching and kicking techniques.

construction

Punching bags are usually cylindrical and have an outer skin made of leather , synthetic leather or nylon . They are attached to the ceiling with a chain or rope. Standing punching bags, on the other hand, stand on the floor, they are attached to a spring frame that opens into a wide base which is filled with heavy material for stabilization or is screwed to the floor. Despite the name sandbag , the filling is usually not made of sand, but of sawdust, grain, corn or special plastic granulate. They are rarely filled with scraps of fabric, foam or other plastics, as they do not reach the weight required for training.

history

Punching bags as training equipment for pugilists and pankratiasts already existed in antiquity. The Greeks called the sack filled with sand (or also with flour or fig kernels) Korykos ( κώρυκος ), the Romans follis pugilatorius . It was also used as a medical aid in therapeutic gymnastics.
