Boyan Slat (born July 27, 1994 in Delft ) is a Dutch inventor , entrepreneur and former student at the aerospace engineering department of the Technical University of Delft , who wants to free the oceans from plastic waste . He has developed a passive system to catch the plastic waste floating in the ocean currents . The trigger for the project was a vacation in Greece in 2011, during which Slat saw more trash than fish while diving at the age of 16. His idea won the Delft University of Technology's Best Technical Design award. He founded The Ocean Cleanup for the further development of possible technologies. Initially, the project was not well received. Since his appearance on the TEDx talk , How the Oceans Can Clean Themselves, the information has spread, bringing in thousands of volunteers and $ 2 million to build a pilot facility. In November 2014 he won the Champion of the Earth of the United Nations Environment Program .

A pilot plant was planned on the Japanese island of Tsushima . Their operation was set for two years. There, one cubic meter of plastic per resident is stranded every year.
