The October 6th Bridge is an elevated highway-like road in Cairo , Egypt . It connects the city with Cairo International Airport, about 20 km away . The bridge was opened in 1996 after a construction period of 30 years. The most important section is one of his two crossings of the Nile . This bridge, built with the participation of the German Dywidag , is 141 meters long and has 2 × 5 lanes. In total, the bridge is 12.5 kilometers long. The name of the bridge refers to the day the Yom Kippur War broke out on October 6, 1973.

The bridge is used by more than half a million people every day. The journey from one end to the other takes up to 45 minutes.

During the protests in Egypt in February 2011, the clashes ranged from Tahrir Square to the bridge ramp on the east side of the Nile.
