The Brünneken

The Brünneken is a pilgrimage chapel northwest of Bökenförde (district of Lippstadt in Westphalia ) on Liebfrauenweg, the district road between Bökenförde and Rixbeck. The pilgrimage chapel with a fountain is surrounded by tall linden trees.

history

Brünneken around 1958

The place in the field corridor is venerated as the place of appearance of the Bökenförder image . According to legend, in the Middle Ages a shepherd saw a portrait of Mary floating over the water of the fountain, whereupon he informed the clergyman of Bökenförde about his discovery. The miraculous image was then transferred to the Bökenförder church in a solemn procession .

A new edition of a devotional book from 1954 makes the place appear nebulous by suddenly claiming that the Lady Chapel already existed in the 16th century. Investigations into the building history of the Brünneken were able to prove as early as 2005 that today's parcel with chapel building and fountain was only created as part of the separation in the Bökenförde field corridor in 1864. A dendrochronological examination of the roof structure in 2015 showed that the chapel was built in 1864. During the investigation of the well in 2016, the age could be clearly proven on the basis of wood samples taken from the area of the sole. Like the entire ensemble, the fountain was built in 1864.

Architectural style

The square chapel was built from rubble stones in 1864 and received a pyramid roof . To the northeast of the chapel, an archaeological excavation in 2016 found a base on which a wooden cross presumably stood. To the south-east of the chapel, a well was created with quarry stones, which, however, was only 3.50 m deep compared to parallel wells in the Bökenförder field corridor, which were used for drinking cattle and had a depth of 5-6 m. A walled up well with a wooden cover made it possible for numerous believers to fetch water there to use for healing purposes.

Renovations

The Lady Chapel was renovated in 1954 by the church painter and sculptor B. Gohla and received a trowel plaster and a wood-paneled ceiling. The artist also created a stone Madonna with a divine child, which is still there today in Brünneken. In addition, some symbols from the Laurentan litany and two old tapestries with angels playing music were brought into the otherwise simple chapel as decorative elements. A wooden cross was placed in front of the building. The next fundamental change took place in 1962 when an apse was added and a tower was added. The fountain was also given a new wall made of Anröchter stone . The wooden cross has been removed.

When funds were available from the Dr. Arnold Hueck Foundation, another major renovation was carried out in 2014-2015. The chapel received a new interior plaster, a Marien window and a new ceiling paneling. A stainless steel stele with historical data was set up in front of the entrance to the chapel. The fountain received a new cover in the form of a stainless steel lid with Marian verses and an oil lamp. The wooden cross northwest of the fountain had been placed there a few years earlier.
