Brabrand [ ˈbʀɑːbʀɑn ] is a district of Aarhus in Denmark , which is located about 6 kilometers west of the city center and immediately north of the Brabrand lake. Brabrand was incorporated into Aarhus in 1970 and has around 19,000 inhabitants.

In the northern part of Brabrand there is a nature area that surrounds Holmstrup Gård . South of Brabrand is the 800-meter-wide and about 3-kilometer-long Brabrand Lake, which connects to Årlev Lake and is crossed by Århus Å . On the banks of this lake is the lovely church of Brabrand , which was built at the beginning of the 13th century.

With Gellerup and Toveshøj, two areas of social conflict have developed within Brabrand . 86% of the population have a migration background, as mainly people of Arab, Turkish, Somali and Vietnamese origin have settled here. In recent years there have been repeated clashes between the Danish police and residents of the settlements.

etymology

The name Brabrand (also Strabrand) refers to a special form of prehistoric Schwendbau , the burning of the forest and the sowing of grain in the ashes, which is known with the Swedish name "Svedjebrug".
