Guru Dev Brahmananda Saraswati

Life

He was born into a Brahmin family in northern India (now Uttar Pradesh ). At the age of nine he left home to devote himself entirely to his spiritual path in seclusion. Around the age of 14 he found his master, Dandi Swami Krishnanand Saraswati, in Uttarkashi in the Himalayas . He later retired to a cave under the direction of his master and decided not to leave it until he achieved enlightenment . In 1902 he was accepted into the order of the sannyasin by his master at the Kumbh Mela .

In 1941 - after decades of quiet solitude - Swami Brahmananda Saraswati accepted the invitation to become the first Shankaracharya (spiritual leader) of Jyotir Math after a vacancy of 150 years. He held this seat until his death in 1953. Adi Shankara (about 788-820), the great innovator of the Vedic tradition of Sanatana Dharma , had four important disciples, Padma-Pada , Hasta-Malaka , Vartika-Kara and Trotaka , each of which founded a monastery in north, south, east and west of India. Jyotirmath is the northern monastery. The veneration that Brahmananda Saraswati was now bestowed on him is evident not least in titles such as “His Divinity” or “Jagadguru Maharaj” (literally: World Teacher, Grand Duke ) that were bestowed on him.

Swami Brahmananda Saraswati was the guru of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi , who shortly before his inauguration became his devoted disciple and later his personal assistant. In the context of the Transcendental Meditation founded by Maharishi , Brahmananda Saraswati is respectfully called "Guru Dev".
