Brain Activity Map Project

The Brain Initiative or BRAIN Initiative ( B rain R esearch through A dvancing I nnovative N euro technologies) is a US-based neuroscience major research project on mapping the brain of man. The aim is to record the activity of all of its 86 billion nerve cells.

The interdisciplinary project was initiated in the USA in early 2013 . It should run over a period of ten years. The financial resources are still unclear, around 3 billion dollars (300 million per year) are under discussion. The Office of Science and Technology Policy , which is part of the Executive Office of the US President, is in charge .

The project is supported by the National Institutes of Health , the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the National Science Foundation , cooperation partners are the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Allen Institute for Brain Science . Representatives from Google , Microsoft and Qualcomm were also involved in the conception .
