The Bramfelder See is located in the Hamburg district of Steilshoop . It has an elongated shape and is fed by several sources, including the former Prökelmoor . In its length from east to west, it measures about 1.2 km. The width is much smaller, in the east it is about 400 meters, at the narrowest point it is almost 100 meters from the north to the south bank. Nowhere is the lake deeper than three meters. A path that is almost three kilometers long leads around it.

Two of the four islands are only separated from the shore by narrow gullies. The largest island is located in the eastern part in the middle of the lake and is about 600 m². For several years there has been a large colony of gray herons on this island . In 2005 over 30 pairs of herons brooded there.

The lake from the north shore

After the lake was used economically by carp farms in the past, it is now a model biotope, the water surface of which is maintained by a fishing club. The shore areas are overgrown, and a number of environmental projects have been set up here. A circuit around the lake of 2.9 km in length made the water an important local recreation area , not only for the nearby Steilshoop development area .

There is a large playground and barbecue area on its west side. The main cemetery in Ohlsdorf borders directly on the north bank of the lake . In the south, the lake water flows over the Seebek first into the Osterbek and finally into the Alster . The islands are under nature protection and can be easily observed from the hiking trail. Not far (approx. 800 m away) from the Bramfelder See is the "small" Bramfelder See, which was formerly also known as the old pond .

The drainage lock

On the night of January 17-18, 2010, strangers broke open the lock at the drainage lock and let the lake run out under the ice into the Seebek . As a result, a large part of the fish population perished. The Sportfischereiverein Elbe eV fears that it will take years for the lake to recover from this catastrophe.

In 2014, the bridge on the western side of the lake was in such poor condition that part of the railing had to be provisionally reinforced to prevent danger. In February 2015, the bridge's planks were finally removed, rendering them unusable. Since the competent authority demanded sound arguments for the preservation of the bridge, local politicians launched a corresponding appeal to the population with the help of the press and developed an application for the reconstruction of the bridge from the submissions received.
