Usterbrand
The Usterbrand of 1832 is the best known case of a machine storm in Switzerland.
event
The Usterbrand took place in Oberuster on November 22nd, 1832 , the day of the commemoration of Ustertag . Small manufacturers ("Tüchler") and home workers from the Zurich Oberland destroyed the mechanical spinning and weaving mill Corrodi & Pfister in Oberuster. They did this out of existential fears. During the march on Ustertag they contributed to overthrow the conservative city of Zurich government. Because the new liberal Grand Council had not complied with their demands published in the “Uster Memorial” for a ban on weaving machines, they destroyed the mechanical spinning and weaving mill in Oberuster.
judgment
75 people were arrested in Oberuster and the Zürcher Oberland. A year later, in 1833, the main culprits of the Usterbrand were sentenced to long chain sentences. As a result of the events, the Grand Council passed a law to protect property in 1835. However, the convicts were released after the Zurich coup in 1839.
