Branxholme Castle is a manor house in Scotland . It is located above the A7 and the Teviot, west of the village of Branxholme in the Council Area Scottish Borders . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, the associated Tentyfoot Tower is also independently classified as a Category A monument.

history

The mansion is on land that has belonged to Clan Scott since 1420 . The previous building was burned down in 1532. In 1544 there was an enclosed defense structure at the site. This had a Z-shaped floor plan with towers at both ends. In 1570 the Earl of Sussex dragged the structure. Within ten years, Walter Scott of Branxholme and Buccleuch rebuilt it, from which time the oldest fragments of the present mansion date. Large parts of the original structure were integrated into the extension from the 1790s. In 1837, William Burn redesigned Branxholme Castle.

Tentyfoot Tower

The Tentyfoot Tower forms the north-eastern end of Branxholme Castle. The defense tower was once integrated into the fortification wall. Today the tower from the 15th century is only preserved as a ruin. In 2008 the structure was added to the Register of Scottish Monuments in Endangerment. In 2012 his condition was classified as very bad and at the same time high risk.
