The brass band BlechKLANG of the Carl Zeiss Jena brass band is a brass band from Jena that is based on the British model.

history

The Carl Zeiss Jena brass band was founded on November 23, 1971 as a fanfare orchestra (FO) of the VEB Carl Zeiss Jena under the direction of Karl-Heinz Lehmann. At the beginning of the work, the orchestra consisted mainly of apprentices from the Zeiss factory. At that time, however, there were only brass instruments and percussion.

In March 1972 Rolf Nilson took over the artistic direction of the fanfare orchestra. The first appearance took place as part of the culture conference in the Kulturhaus Jena-Nord. In December of the same year, the Christmas tower blowing from the Jena town hall tower took place for the first time.

In 1973 the fanfare orchestra took part in March on the 27th anniversary of the Free German Youth . In addition, it was appointed to the district music corps of the FDJ Gera and delegated to the 10th World Festival of Youth and Students.

From March 1974 Lothar Leuthold took over the artistic direction. One month later, the participation in the district performance comparison of the fanfare trains with the rating "Excellent" took place. In May the fanfare orchestra consisted of 130 members and took part in the May demonstration.

In May 1975 it was graded with the upper level "very good" and thus the admission requirements for the Central Music Corps were fulfilled . The fanfare orchestra played for the music show “30. Anniversary of the Liberation from Fascism ”.

To mark the 30th anniversary of VEB Carl Zeiss Jena in 1978, the orchestra played a gala concert in July. This was followed by a trip to Hungary. In 1979 it took part in the GDR's national youth festival in the World Youth Stadium in Berlin. In October the fanfare orchestra was awarded the Arthur Becker Silver Medal.

In 1981 the SED participated in the 10th party congress on Marx-Engels-Platz in Berlin together with the Central Music Corps. The fanfare orchestra then went on a concert tour under the motto "Sounding Fanfare" in Rostock and Warnemünde. For the 10th anniversary there was a gala concert in the Jena Volkshaus .

In 1983, in July, the Fanfarenochester took part in a nightly ZMK performance with a total of 1,800 musicians in front of the Sanssouci Palace and at the 7th Gymnastics and Sports Festival in Leipzig. In October, the orchestra was able to receive the Gera District Art Prize for achievements and services to socialist folk culture.

In June 1984 the fanfare orchestra was awarded a gold medal at the Gera Workers' Festival. At the end of the year there was a Christmas concert with the boys' choir of the Jena Philharmonic .

The 37th GDR Athletics Championships in Jena in June 1986 were opened with a concert by the fanfare orchestra, to which the title “Siegerfanfare” was heard. This piece was written by Rolf Nilson, the former musical director.

In 1987 the Jena ensemble took 4th place in an international comparison of performance in Poland.

After the Thuringian Brass Band Association was founded in Jena on November 3, 1990, the Carl Zeiss Jena brass band from the former FDJ fanfare orchestra was founded on December 1. Just one year later, the orchestra took part in the 1st Thuringia State Orchestra Competition under its new name and achieved performance level I (very good performance). At the 3rd German Orchestra Competition in Goslar in May 1992, the brass band reached level II.

After the death of Lothar Leuthold in March 1995, Ralf Fischer took over the artistic direction. In November 1996 the brass band in the Jenaer Volkshaus celebrated its 25th anniversary.

The restructuring according to the British model and the renaming of the performance orchestra to Brass Band BlechKLANG took place in the years after 2000. The trumpets , fanfares and tenor horns were gradually replaced by cornets , baritons and euphonies . In line with the ideal, the repertoire has also been expanded to include numerous original brass band works and transcriptions from all styles.

In 2011 the Brass Band performed a joint concert with the Jena Philharmonic in the Jena Volkshaus under the name "Brass & Sinfonik" . The event was repeated in 2015 under the name “Brass & Sinfonik II”. The work "At the Crossroads", written by the composer Oliver Waespi especially for this concert, was premiered.
