history

The classic since 1904: Stüsser's herb bitters

The Stüsser was founded in 1904 by Peter Stüsser I as a schnapps distillery serving beer. The distillery was in the basement of the corner house. In addition to clear schnapps and bitters , various liqueurs were distilled from various essences . After the war, the inn was owned by Peter Stüsser jun. and his wife rebuilt. She still managed the business - very old - until the 1980s. After her death, the restaurant was continued by members of the Stüsser family; In 2003 Erica Pantone took over the brewery as the leaseholder. In 2007 a dispute about a beer purchase clause between the landlady and the homeowner escalated. As a result, the restaurant was closed on December 31, 2008 and the historic beer counter was removed.

Todays situation

On July 1st, 2009 the brewery reopened as Stüsser brewery under the management of restaurateur Markus Zehnpfennig and managing director Horst Diercks. The historic ambience in the traditional, rustic Cologne brewery style - including the bar counter - was essentially retained or restored despite extensive technical modernization work. In addition to Stüsser's herbal bitters , fruit schnapps , corn and vodka, which has been distilled since 1904 (with interruptions) , sparkling wine and wines are also served, which are produced by an affiliated winery . The Sion- Kölsch, which has been served unchanged since 1951 , mainly offers down-to-earth dishes from the regional Rhenish cuisine . On June 1, 2010 the traditional Stüsser brewery celebrated its 90th anniversary with great effort and musical accompaniment.

Trivia

Stüsser "light" herbal liqueur

During the carnival session, the Stüsser brewery also has a large number of "Jecken" from the large traditional associations in Cologne, who, in addition to the Kölsch, also like to try the in-house Stüsser's herb bitter . Because this dark-colored herbal liqueur at “Jubel, Trubel, Heiterkeit” often spilled on the gorgeous uniforms of dignitaries in the past and left ugly brown stains there, the former landlord Peter Stüsser, who was still associated with his former family distillery, went to the “Mixturen- Archive ”and for the 2012 session the two developed the Stüsser“ lighter ”herbal liqueur - as a“ spot-free schnapps for the revelers ”.
