The brown-gray gloss weevil ( Polydrusus (Neoeustolus) cervinus ), also known as the deer gloss weevil , is a beetle from the family of weevils and the subfamily Entiminae . The species belongs to the subgenus Neoeustolus .

features

The beetles are 3.9–5.7 mm long. They are covered with gray, copper, and dark brown scales. The wing covers show numerous dark spots. The femora are sharply toothed. A very similar species of beetle is Polydrusus pilosus .

distribution

The brown-gray gloss weevil is widespread in Europe. The species is also found in the British Isles. To the east, the occurrence extends to Siberia. The species was introduced in North America. There it is now represented in New England and in Eastern Canada ( Québec ).

Way of life

The beetles are mainly found in spring from April to June and in autumn. They are found on the foliage of broad-leaved trees such as oak, birch and hazel. The larvae living in the ground feed on the roots of common ball grass ( Dactylis glomerata ).
