Brave is an open source web browser for the Windows , macOS and Linux operating systems as well as for Android and Apple iOS . Brendan Eich is the initiator and project manager .
Conception
The Chromium -based browser uses an ad blocker to block ads and trackers. It offers an option to show certain advertisements from its own advertising service, 'Brave Rewards', which do not track usage behavior , in order to protect the user's privacy. The browser user and browser provider each receive 15% of the revenue for the display, and the website operator receives up to 70% of the income. The remuneration is based on a Basic Attention Token . The user should be able to decide whether to display advertising.
With Brave Payments, the Basic Attention Token (BAT, an ERC20 token based on the Ethereum - Blockchain ) is used to pay out a monthly budget to website operators and, since November 2017, YouTube channels based on the call duration.
Data protection and security
Since many website operators overload their platforms with JavaScript code, Eich criticizes the failure to separate advertising content and the content necessary for operating the website. The aim of the browser is to block everything on the web that could endanger the privacy of users. That is why dangerous, harmful advertising as well as tracking pixels and HTTP cookies should be blocked. HTTPS Everywhere is integrated.
criticism
Representatives of The New York Times , Washington Post and Wall Street Journal, as well as other members of the Newspaper Association of America, described this as illegal in a letter; the design of the browser is indistinguishable from the theft of the contents of the newspapers in order to publish them on the Brave Software Inc. website. CEO Brendan Eich, however, stated that the browser is not the problem, but the solution. The browser does not use the content of the web pages for unauthorized republication, but rather simply composes the pages as a tool. The further criticism that the income from browser advertising does not offset the costs of acquiring own advertising is also incorrect.
At the beginning of June 2020 it was announced that Brave would automatically add a reference link to certain page entries (especially for exchanges for crypto currencies) without the consent of the users in order to generate income through affiliate partners. The function is now deactivated by default.
history
The browser was first released on January 20, 2016. The further development is documented in a timeline.
