Break the Tango is a dance show that combines street dance and tango . It emerged from the collaboration between the Swiss show producer Darko Soolfrank and the Argentine choreographer and tango world champion German Cornejo and celebrated its premiere in 2016 in the Maag Halle in Zurich . Break the Tango brings two very different dance styles together. While twelve tango dancers try to defend their origins and origins, four breakdancers stir up the scene. Initially, both groups face each other in a hostile manner and challenge each other in dance. Right at the start of the show, there is a battle that lets the two parties compete against each other. In the course of the performance, both sides get closer. Initially timid, then more and more intense, the fusion affects the two dance styles, until the end tango and street dance merge into one discipline.

Emergence

While the production "Tango Fire" is guesting in the MAAG Halle in Zurich in 2013, Darko Soolfrank, operator of the MAAG Halle, and the main dancer and two-time tango world champion German Cornejo get in touch and talk about new tango forms and influences. It is decided to promote the idea of ​​a collaboration under the project title “Tango Revolución”. In December 2014, the first 40-minute workshop presentation will take place at Club La Catedral in Buenos Aires, choreographed by German Cornejo. Breakdance is not yet integrated in this workshop edition at this point in time. It wasn't until spring 2015 that Cornejo and Soolfrank take a breakdance choreographer on board. The Swiss Björn “Buz” Meier designs breakdance choreographies that fit into the tango. Another workshop with tango dancers, breakdancers and the band will take place in Buenos Aires in May 2016, and the show will have a clear central theme. Three months later, in August 2016, the final rehearsals will begin in Switzerland in the MAAG hall. The choreographies will be worked on for five weeks. On September 20, 2016 the world premiere of “Break the Tango” will take place. After a three-week guest performance, preparations for a first tour begin, which will start in Hamburg at the end of August 2017 . Other guest cities in Berlin , Vienna , Paris and various cities in Italy (including Milan and Rome ). In September 2018, “Break the Tango” will be performed outside of Europe for the first time during Bangkok's 20th International Festival for Dance & Music . In autumn 2019 the company will start another tour, which will start in Zurich, followed by Geneva, Düsseldorf, Berlin, Vienna and Munich.

The show is accompanied by a five-piece band under the direction of Argentine Ovidio Velazquez, the electrotango -Hits of Otros Aires and new pop songs such. B. Beyoncé and Shakira play; Velazquez is inspired by Electrotango, he interprets songs by the Argentine bands Otros Aires and Bajofondo , but also traditional pieces in a new way. Electrotango - Tango electrónico - is the name given to a mix and / or arrangement of classical tango music, Tango Argentino, to which electronic beats and sounds are added. In Electrotango, melodic style copies or classical tango pieces can be used.
