Breakwind Ridge ( English for windbreaker ridge ) is a 3 km long and up to 860 m high mountain ridge with north-south orientation on the north coast of South Georgia . It rises southwest of the head end of Fortuna Bay .
The ridge was probably named Breakwind Range by scientists from the British Discovery Investigations , who mapped Fortuna Bay between 1929 and 1930. After survey work between 1951 and 1952 by the South Georgia Survey , the name was adapted to better reflect the actual nature of the formation. It is named after the fact that this ridge keeps strong winds from the southwest and west.
