Bregl da Heida

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On Bregl since Heida in Grisons Sagogn was in the 7th century an early medieval , Carolingian hall church with horseshoe-shaped apse . The facility stood around 300 meters east of the Vitg Dadò part of the village, near the ruins of Schiedberg Castle . Only a few foundation walls have survived. The area is owned by the Canton of Graubünden and is protected by the Swiss Confederation.

The church is the Columbanskirche mentioned in the will of Bishop Tello 765 . It can be assumed that S. Columban was a private church of the Churrätischen family of the Viktoriden , who owned a large manor house nearby, on Bregl, which is described in detail in the will. No other written sources are known.

In addition to a heatable house and utility buildings with water pipes, the farm also included vegetable and fruit gardens and vineyards. Subterranean wall remnants that go out from S. Columban indicate the dimensions of the manor.

Since the farmers repeatedly came across stones while plowing in that area, excavations were carried out between 1965 and 1967. Foundations of houses and a church from the 6th or 7th century with dimensions of 14.5 by 7.5 meters came to light. In the Carolingian era, a horseshoe-shaped apse was added to the east . In the north and probably also in the south parts of the building were added. The whole complex was surrounded by an enclosure wall, which was also built in two stages. The church was later rebuilt several times and finally used profanely. Exactly when this happened, why and when it was abandoned is not known.

A stele was erected at the end of the 1960s based on a design by the architect Peter Zumthor ; In 2004 it was renovated.
