Breidbart index

The Breidbart Index , named after its inventor, Seth Breidbart , is the most important cancel index on Usenet .

The dissemination intensity of articles of the same nature is determined with a cancel index . If the index exceeds a limit value, the articles in question are referred to as spam . They may then be removed by third-party cancellation .

Cancel index

Crossposting is the sending of an article in several groups.
Multiposting is sending the same content multiple times.

The basic idea of the Breidbart Index is to evaluate these methods differently. On the one hand, less data has to be transmitted and stored with crossposts . On the other hand, excessive cross- posts (ECP) are a plausible beginner's mistake, while excessive multiposts (EMP) suggest the deliberate use of special software.

It is crucial to record different articles as essentially identical (in the English original: substantively identical ). This includes, among other things:

Messages that are identical byte for byte;

messages which are identical in themselves and differ only in minor adjustments to the group;

Messages promoting the same product, service, or website;

Messages that consist of the same signature (and nothing else);

Messages that differ only in the quoted text.

Breidbart Index (BI)

The BI of a set of articles is the sum of the square roots of n , where n is the number of newsgroups to which each article was posted. A series of is evaluated while m consubstantial articles within a period of 45 days. This means that postings older than 45 days do not count towards the series.

Version 2 of the Breidbart Index (BI2)

The BI2 is defined as the sum of the square roots of n plus the sum of n divided by two. The BI2 is more aggressive than the BI. A cross post in 35 groups is enough for a single message to exceed the limit of 20.

Skirvin-Breidbart index (SBI, BI3)

The terms Skirvin-Breidbart-Index and SBI can be found in the Spam Thresholds FAQ . In the hierarchy nl. * This index is called BI3.

The SBI is calculated as the BI2 but sums the number of groups in Followup-to: (if available) instead of the number of groups in newsgroups: . This means that setting a follow-up to: is rewarded.

BI7 and BI30

In the Usenet hierarchy de. * , The Breidbart index applies with a time window of 7 days instead of 45. The abbreviation BI7 has been used for this.

In the hierarchy hamster.de.*, the Breidbart index applies with a time window of 30 days instead of 45. The abbreviation BI30 has become established for this.

Cancel index in at. *

Is defined in the FAQ of the group at.usenet.cancel-reports. In the call for calls ( CfV ) and in the FAQ, only the term cancel index is used. Unofficial abbreviations are CI and ACI .

The ACI of a single posting is calculated as 3 plus the number of groups that posting was sent to. The index of several postings is the sum of the indices of the individual postings.

Limit values

According to RFC 1036 , an article may only be canceled by the author or the administrator of the server on which the article was uploaded to Usenet.
According to the Spam Thresholds FAQ, a Breidbart index of 20 applies to the entire Usenet, i.e. H. Item series that are above this value can be removed by anyone using a third-party cancel .
In some hierarchies, alternative (stricter) limit values have been agreed upon.
All types of cancel are prohibited in the free. * Hierarchy.

In fact, a cancel message is only a request that can be automatically evaluated by software to delete a specific article. News server operators are free to decide how to implement the conflicting guidelines.
