News server

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A news server is a server (computer) on which Usenet messages are forwarded, stored and made available.

The NNTP protocol is generally used to retrieve Usenet messages - mostly called articles or postings . The NNTP protocol is also used to forward the articles, but the classic form of article forwarding via UUCP is still in use today (2008).

The operator of a news server determines how long the postings remain on the server (the so-called retention time ). The retention time of the news servers offered by most Internet providers is usually very short and the selection of newsgroups is very small. However, paid newsgroup service providers ( called payserver in this context ) have also established themselves. Since films, software and other data can be stored in addition to normal text messages, this also leads to copyright infringements .

Common news server software

In a professional environment

  • INN
    • Very large range of functions, extensive expansion and configuration options, and therefore also a bit resource-intensive
    • runs on Unix and Unix-like operating systems, is free software under an open source license
  • Diablo
    • Just as extensive and high-performance as INN, runs under Unix and Unix-like operating systems, is free software under an open source license
  • DNews
    • commercial news server software
    • similarly extensive and high-performance as INN
    • runs under Unix and Unix-like operating systems as well as Windows
  • C News
    • a classic (has existed since 1987 ) among the news servers
    • Article exchange via UUCP or NNTP , runs on Unix and Unix-like operating systems
    • since the 1990 largely by he-years INN replaced
  • WendzelNNTPd
    • Small Usenet server for Linux / Unix / BSD systems, open source (GPLv3), IPv6 support
    • Database abstraction layer (Sqlite3 / MySQL), Role Based Access Control (RBAC) and Access Control Lists (ACL), invisible newsgroups, automatic prevention of double postings

In the home environment and in small organizations

  • hamster
    • runs under Windows, suitable for small installations, e.g. in the home environment
  • Leafnode and sn
    • run under Unix and Unix-like operating systems, for small installations, e.g. in the home environment

Historical news server software

B News

Exists from 1981 to around 1993 , only in 1991 there were more C news sites than B news sites (see < news: 1991Jul24.164118.19610@zoo.toronto.edu >), no longer usable in today's Usenet without modifications. He introduced concepts, formats and protocols that are still the basis of Usenet today.

A news

Has existed since 1979–1981 and was the first news server software in the world. Completely incompatible with the formats and protocols of today's Usenet and has been replaced by B News .
