Kurpfalzstrasse is a comparatively broad street, hence the name “Breite Strasse” ( “Breed Schdroos” in the Mannheim dialect ), the vertical central axis of the horseshoe-shaped square area of Mannheim city center. Like the other streets within the Mannheimer squares, the street has no addresses or house numbers. The addresses are identified by their square names (including house numbers).

Tram lines 1, 3, 4, 5 and 7 run by Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH (RNV) with the stops "Schloss", "Paradeplatz", "Marktplatz" and "Abendakademie" run along Breite Straße, which is mainly designed as a pedestrian zone and shopping street. (formerly "Neckartor"). Lines 2 and 6 cross it at Paradeplatz.

The Breite Strasse is open to traffic between Bismarckstrasse in the south and Paradeplatz. The tram tracks run in the middle of the street without any structural separation. The central tram crossing point is on Paradeplatz , which is directly affected by Breite Straße. This is where the Breite Straße intersects with the planks , the main horizontal axis and the pedestrian zone of the inner city squares. From here on, Breite Straße is designed as a pedestrian zone with tram tracks in the middle up to its northern end. Between Paradeplatz and Marktplatz, the pedestrian zone is crossed by the so-called Fressgasse. The next structural interruption is the market square , which adjoins Breite Straße to the west. From here to the “Neckartor”, where Mannheim's largest city gate from 1725 was once located, the street is characterized by shops and fast food restaurants . After another 175 m, Breite Straße ends at the Kurpfalzkreisel.
