The broad-winged caterpillar fly ( Ectophasia crassipennis ) is a two-winged fly from the family of caterpillar flies (Tachinidae).

features

The broad-winged caterpillar fly reaches a body length of 5–9 mm. It has a variable color. The males have a yellow abdomen with a broad black longitudinal band. Their wings have dark wing veins and spots. At the base the wings are colored yellow. The males of Ectophasia crassipennis can be distinguished from similar species such as Phasia hemiptera on the basis of their wing veins . In Ectophasia crassipennis, the R5 cell extends to the outer edge of the wing. The related and similar species Ectophasia oblonga has a red abdomen with a reduced black longitudinal ligament.

The females are usually not as large as their male counterparts. They have a wide, dark transverse ligament on their abdomen. The end of the abdomen is whitish. A black longitudinal band runs centrally over the orange-colored front part of the abdomen. The wings are colored yellow at the base, halfway along the length of the wing there is a broad, dark spot on the front edge. In contrast to the males, the wing tips are clear.

distribution

The broad-winged caterpillar fly occurs in the Palearctic . It occurs in southern Europe. The species becomes rarer towards the north. In Germany it occurs mainly in the warm regions in the south and southwest. The species occurs on the Channel Islands .

Way of life

The typical habitat of the broad-winged caterpillar fly is formed by dry open land biotopes. The flies can be seen from mid-May to late September, most commonly between late August and early September. The females lay their eggs on various bed bugs , especially representatives of the stink bugs (Pentatomidae). However, bed bugs from other families are also infested, including sting bugs (Acanthosomatidae), edge bugs (Coreidae) and ground bugs (Lygaeidae). The hatched larvae are endoparasites . They bore into their host animal and develop inside. The flies are flower visitors.
