The Marginated or Marginated beetle ( Dytiscus latissimus ) is a beetle from the family of diving beetles (Dytiscidae).

features

The wide rim reaches a length of 36 to 44 mm and is thus the largest representative of the swimming beetle in Europe. With its yellow edges and the middle and hind legs, which are formed into swimming legs, it shows a similarity to other Dytiscus species such as the yellow beetle , but besides its size, a characteristic way of distinguishing it is its wing-like widened cover wings.

Occurrence

The distribution area of the Breitrand is between eastern France and western Siberia, here the beetle colonizes larger, nutrient-poor standing waters with shallow water areas overgrown with reed and sedge . In addition, gravel pits and peat pits are also possible for the species, but they should also have dense bank and shallow water vegetation. For Germany, there are currently only isolated reports in Saxony and Brandenburg. There are also individual reports from Bavaria.

food

Insects and carrion are the main sources of food for the predatory species, but sick fish are also captured. Healthy fish are not part of the range of prey, as both adults and larvae are too clumsy to hunt.

Hazard and protection

The wide margin has become very rare in large parts of Europe and is threatened with extinction throughout Germany ( Red List Status 1). After 1980 only eight localities of the species are known.

The beetle is particularly endangered by excessive fish stocking as well as by weed removal, water pollution and nutrient inputs from fishing.
