The Bremen Rescue Medal was reintroduced on May 8, 1973 by the Bremen Senate for the State of Bremen by order after the Bremen Rescue Medal in bronze and silver (donated on November 20, 1908; awarded until April 6, 1933) in the period of National Socialism had been replaced by the rescue medal (1933) . The Bremen Rescue Medal is state recognition for rescue operations in the state of Bremen.

Classification of the rescue medal

It is noteworthy that Bremen, even with the Bremen Rescue Medal from 1908, is the only country in Germany where the two honors, both bronze and silver, are not to be worn on the ribbon, but instead represent a non-wearable award . The “weakest form” of the honor is also the public commendation.

Rescue medal in bronze

The bronze rescue medal is awarded to people if the rescuer found himself in serious mortal danger during the rescue act .

Rescue medal in silver

The rescue medal in silver, on the other hand, is awarded if the rescuer found himself in particularly serious mortal danger during the rescue act . However, it can also be awarded if the rescuer found himself in considerable but not particularly serious mortal danger with the rescue medal, if the rescuer was already in possession of the bronze rescue medal at the time.

It has been expressly regulated that the first award of the rescue medal in silver excludes the award of the rescue medal in bronze, but vice versa the bronze rescue medal does not exclude the award of the silver level. However, it must be noted that the rescue medal can only be awarded once at each level.

Public commendation

The public commendation can only be considered:

  • if the rescuer was not in danger of his own life during the underlying rescue act and
  • if the rescuer has acted despite a particular degree of helpfulness and determination, but the rescue has been unsuccessful or
  • if the rescuer has only shown a particular level of helpfulness and determination or
  • the rescue act itself was not carried out independently to a minimum.

Eligible persons

The Bremen Rescue Medal is awarded:

  • a) to persons who have carried out an act of rescue in the state of Bremen, even if their place of residence is not in the state of Bremen;
  • b) to persons who have their place of residence in the state of Bremen, even if the rescue act was not carried out in the state of Bremen; and
  • c) to crew members of the ships based in the state of Bremen.

The Senate has expressly reserved that the rescue medal can also be awarded if the prerequisites for the award are not met, but the personality of the rescued person justifies this because of his relationship with the state of Bremen. In addition to the rescue medal and the public commendation, a cash reward can also be granted in appropriate cases.

Exclusion from awards and exemptions

Disclaimer

The rescue medal is not awarded to people if the rescuer has already been awarded for the underlying rescue act by another federal state (prohibition of double award) or if the rescue act was more than two years ago. Furthermore, it is not awarded if the savior does not appear worthy of the award. Likewise, the rescue medal is not awarded to people who have not yet reached the age of 18; in addition to the public commendation, they receive a gift adapted to their age.

Exceptions

The rescue medal is usually not awarded to those persons who have been entrusted with protecting the lives of others for official or professional reasons or who are responsible for averting dangers to the general public for the reasons mentioned. Exceptions are only permitted if they have significantly exceeded the average level of their duties during the rescue act .

Preliminary investigation

The investigation into every known rescue act is ex officio by the local police in whose area the rescue act was carried out. For rescue acts, i. H. Rescue from danger of water, on a ship the water police investigates, whereby in this case an expert opinion is to be obtained additionally.

Award procedure

The Senate decides on the award of the rescue medal, the granting of a monetary reward and the granting of a public commendation in connection with a gift. The Senate then reports to the Senator for the Interior on the basis of the results of the police investigation about the rescue act. In all other cases, the Senator for Internal Affairs decides on behalf of the Senate himself. The Senate Chancellery is responsible for executing the Senate's resolutions. With the award of the rescue medal and the award of a public commendation, a certificate is issued, the award itself and the public commendation are then officially announced.

Appearance and texture of the rescue medal

The round medal with a diameter of 61 mm is made either of bronze or silver and shows the embossed state coat of arms of Bremen on its front. Below is the 3-line inscription: DER SENATE / DER FREIEN HANSESTADT / BREMEN, also in raised letters in capital letters. The reverse side of the medal is smooth and bears the 4-line inscription in the center: FOR / RETTUNG / AUS / GEFAHR . This lettering is also shown embossed.
