The distillery & distillery Heinrich Habbel is a family owned distillery and distillery based in Sprockhövel in southern North Rhine-Westphalia on the edge of the Ruhr area .

history

The distillery was founded in 1878 as an agricultural grain distillery with cattle ranching and restaurant and was bought in 1923 by Josef Habbel, Michaela Habbel's great-grandfather and Michael Habbel's grandfather. Agriculture, distillery and restaurant continued to operate.

In 1954 the company passed to Heinrich Habbel, the son of Josef Habbel. Heinrich Habbel, his brother Josef and his wife Cäcilie ran the business together and expanded the spirits business. The main customers were gastronomy and mines.

In 1969 after the death of Heinrich Habbel, the business was inherited by Cäcilie Habbel. In 1970 the distillery was handed over to Michael Habbel.

In 1981 the Stifts distillery in Herdecke was taken over by Michael Habbel, the Stifts distillery was also the owner of the trademark rights and a large number of recipes of the Adler distillery Peters from Dortmund (takeover in 1954, formerly Germany's largest juniper producer and supplier to numerous distilleries and distilleries all over Germany).

In 1988, after the death of Wilhelm Saure, grain distillery in Gevelsberg  (1888–1988), Michael Habbel took over the customer base and the recipes.

In 1994 takeover of the technical equipment and the employees of the Levering distillery belonging to the Schwelm brewery , from then on well-tried products and new developments were produced exclusively for the Schwelm brewery. This also included the herbal liqueur Ossenkämper, which was newly revised.  

Michaela Habbel joined the company in 2011 and now runs the distillery and distillery together with her father.

In 2014, a completely new distillery with fermentation facilities of over 400 hl., Its own grain mill , mash tuns and pot-still distillation for whiskey was put into operation.

Now larger quantities of whiskey and grain products can also be produced. Around 40,000 liters of spirits are sold annually.

2018 Takeover of some equipment and various recipes from the Hegemann distillery (1869–2018) from Sprockhövel. The Habbel distillery is now the last still producing distillery in a wide area that still processes raw materials into alcohol, malt, rye, wheat, buckwheat, peated malt, various types of fruit, are used as raw materials to produce this alcohol.

Awards

The Habbel distillery has already received numerous awards for its product range, such as B. "Spirit of The Year", "Liqueur of the Year", "Oldest German Whiskey from 1977". After the classifications as “First Class Distillery” and “Master Class Distillery”, the highest classification as “World Class Distillery” took place in 2019.

In 2017, the Hillock Single Malt 6.5 / 14 was selected by a jury at the World Spirits Award with "double gold" as the world's best whiskey of the year. In the following year, Habbel received a total of five medals for various spirits, including whiskey and gin. In 2019, the distillery's products were awarded a total of two double golds , four golds and four silver.
