The opera is about the Gallic conqueror Brennus (here Brenno ) who invaded Tuscany with an army of colonists and finally in 387 BC. Wants to storm and plunder Rome.

After a victory over the Romans, Brennus received the news that Hostilia , the wife of the Roman general Fabius, was among the prisoners . After Fabius tried to help her escape, he offers her life at his side, combined with Fabius' death. Fabius wants to do without Hostilia to save the country, but she has not yet agreed. When Selinde, Brenno's wife, arrives, Hostilia's willingness to make sacrifices and the words of his wife move him to give peace and reunite Fabius and Hostilia.
