Breuddwyd Macsen

Breuddwyd Macsen [ 'breiðuid' maksen ] ("Macsen's Dream") - recorded in Llyfr Gwyn Rhydderch ("The White Book of Rhydderch") - is the title of a story in the Mabinogion of Welsh mythology .

The Roman Emperor Macsen Wledig falls in love with a beautiful woman who appeared to him in a dream. After a long search, his messengers find this woman in Wales , Elen Luyddawg , the daughter of King Eudaf Hen . Therefore Macsen conquered Britain, married Elen, made her empress and gave her father rulership over the whole country. In the meantime, a counter-emperor is chosen by his enemies in Rome , but with the help of Elen's brothers, including Cynan , who was his opponent first , Macsen is able to recapture the dignity of the emperor.

Macsen's name is based on that of the Roman emperor Maxentius (306-312), but its historical counterpart is the general and usurper Magnus Maximus , who due to an acclamation of his troops in Britain , Gaul and Spain as (co-) emperor alongside Valentinian II. until his violent death.
