Distribution area

Breviceps macrops is a species of amphibian from the genus Breviceps .

description

The body is proportionally larger and the trunk less distended than in Breviceps gibbosus and Breviceps mosambicus . The head-torso length is up to 48 millimeters, 6.5 to 8 times the eye diameter. The interorbital space is barely half the width of an upper eyelid. The fingers are relatively short and thick. The first and second fingers are the same length and twice as long as the fourth finger. They are, however, slightly shorter than the third finger. This is no longer than the eye. The toes are quite short and increase in length from the first to the fourth toe. The fourth toe is no longer than the third finger. The fifth toe is as long as the second toe. The subarticular cusps of the fingers are very small and only slightly protruding. There are no subarticular bumps on the toes. There are two large, slightly protruding metatarsal cusps, the medial one of which is longer than its distance from the end of the first toe. The upper part of the trunk is covered with small, smooth warts. Legs and underside are smooth. The top is light sand-colored as well as dark brown spotted and marbled. There is a narrow, straight and dark horizontal stripe at the front and a wide, angled or arched dark horizontal stripe at the back between the eyelids. The upper lip, the limbs and the underside are white.

Occurrence

The species occurs along the coast of Little Namaqualand from south of Kleinsee in the extreme west of South Africa to Lüderitz in the extreme southwest of Namibia.

Systematics

The species Breviceps macrops was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1907 .

Hazards and protective measures
