Socialist Labor Brigade

The honorary title Brigade of Socialist Labor was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was awarded in the form of a medal in the form of rays. The title was founded on August 6, 1959 and was first awarded to 100 distinguished brigades on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the GDR . It was awarded to all production brigades for exemplary commitments regarding:

  • socialist way of working
  • socialist learning and
  • to live socialistically

Until this honorary title was dissolved, it was usually awarded on May 1st, Labor Day:

  • 1959: 100 times
  • 1960: 972 times and
  • 1961: 2765 times.
  • 1962: no more awards as of May 1st, as it was previously dissolved.

Successor on March 15, 1962 was the new honorary title Collective of Socialist Work .

With the award of the honorary title, a brigade certificate was presented as well as a bonus for the collective. In addition, each member of the brigade received this medal and certificate.

Appearance

The medal in the form of a square ray star with rounded corners was bronze until the end of his awards, was 30 × 20 mm in size and showed a red enamelled medallion with a hammer and compass on its obverse , each flanked by an ear of wheat. Around the medallion is a writing ring with the inscription: BRIGADE OF SOCIALIST WORK . An oak leaf was placed on each of the four corners of the star. The reverse of the medal (Sterns), on the other hand, shows the five-line inscription: SOCIALISTIC / WORK / LERNEN UND / LEBEN and underneath two horizontal oak leaves. So she resembled his successor.

Carrying method

The medal was worn on a bronze, red enamelled clasp measuring 25 × 9 mm on the upper left side of the chest. In this a horizontal field in the size 17 × 4 mm has been embossed, which also shows the enamelled colors black-red-gold horizontally.
