The Bright Star Catalog (also Yale Catalog of Bright Stars ) is an astronomical catalog of bright stars . It is the successor to the Harvard Revised Photometry Catalog , which was published in 1908 by Edward Charles Pickering . The abbreviation HR (for Harvard Revised ) is used to refer to the Bright Star catalog  .

According to its authors, the Bright Star catalog should contain all stars visible to the naked eye and therefore contain all stars that are brighter than 6.5  mag . In addition to the Bayer and Flamsteed names and the magnitude , the proper motion , parallax and other comments are given for each star .

The entries in the catalog are arranged according to the right ascension of epoch  B1900. It contains 9110 objects, 14 of which have meanwhile been identified as novae or extragalactic objects - these objects are still included in the catalog today in order to maintain the consecutive numbering. In 1983 an addition was published containing 2603 additional stars up to a magnitude of 7.1.

The first edition of the Bright Star catalog appeared in 1930. The last printed version was the 4th edition in 1982, the 5th edition has only been available online or as an electronic version since 1991.
